Massaging Special Needs Children (MSNC) volunteer workshop
at Promised Land Special Education centre, Shenzhen.
While developing countries understand autism as a medical disorder, the general public in China have little understanding of autism, especially do not know how to make contacts with these special needs children. Children and families of children with autism are often left ostracized from their communities and extended families.
I was exposed to the real life importance to healthy living and the need for health awareness within communities especially children from age 0 to 18 year-old. I have facilitated many children wellness workshops for parents and caregiver groups to learn how to massage children to boost their health, bonding and happiness. Since Feb 2012, I has been volunteered myself to lead a group of volunteers to give therapeutic massage to the special needs children at the Promised Land Special Education Centre, Shenzhen. And the results are very encouraging as children are always anticipating to the massage session, positive progress of children and good feedback from the caregivers.
The organization was an incredible one to volunteer for. Their mindset toward the Massage Therapy for children was realistic and natural while the wonderfully patient individuals on staff were helpful and understanding. It was an honor for me to give my knowledge and experiences with a group of local and international volunteers to massage the children in the centre on most of the Wednesday mornings from 9.30am to 11.30am or before lunch.
With the helps and enthusiasms of current volunteers, our Massaging Special Needs Children (MSNC) required more volunteers in order to be able to massage even more special needs children. Volunteers may come in to help and learn how to massage the children one time in a week or a month or on a regular basis. A regular nurturing massage for special needs children could increase the sense of belonging, caring to others and relaxation. The massage techniques are slightly modified to help autistics become more comfortable with human touch. Clinical results have shown great improvements in communication between autistic patients and their caregivers, leading to a better quality of life. Massage also promotes relaxation and breathing regulation. Breathing exercises often work to calm autistic patients and reduce hyperactivity.
We also want to reach more parents of the special needs children to share with them the miracle of the nurturing massage could help the emotional and physical growth of their children. Parents are always welcome to meet us at the weekly workshop.
